How to unstuck yourself- a very effective exercise

When ever I become stuck in a problem or challenge in life, I call upon my NLP toolkit to help me make quick and effective shifts. One such tool that I use, and my clients love being taken through in a coaching session is something called Well Formed Outcomes.


Well formed Outcomes is a NLP coaching technique that goes far beyond goal setting and is outcomes based. It's a heart exercise to get you focussed on what you want and more importantly how to achieve it.


For clarity, there is a difference between a goal and an outcome

  • A goal is what you do to get your outcome

  • An outcome is the result of accomplishing your goal


Most people have dreams, desires or goals but almost all forget about the outcome. By starting with the outcome, in a positive state, it allows you to recognise more than one way to achieve what you want. Eg: You desire to get married- this is a goal. The outcome would be to be happily married to a compatible partner who you can build a life with and have a family and loving home - this is the outcome.


Using this approach helps you uncover hidden assets and clarify your desires. It increases your range of choices. It is a simple yet very powerful process that gives you practical results, from the very first time you apply it.


Do this exercise for any dream, desire or goal you wish to achieve


Here it goes:


Outcome: What do you want? (State in positive)

Is it specific, definite and measurable?

Can it be initiated and maintained by yourself?

How will you know when you have it? (What sensory evidence -what does it look like, smell like, sound like, taste like, feel like, etc)

What are all the steps you need to take?

What will you have to give up to have it?

What do you need to do to get it?

What will having it give you? For what purpose do you want it?

It's this simple to become unstuck. You can use it for any and all dreams, desires or goals in life. My clients have had huge shifts using this simple exercise. Give it a go
